South Korean Nationals Arrested for Illegal Online Casino Operation in Thailand
Thailand has recently taken action against two South Korean nationals who were accused of running and operating illegal online casinos in the country. This crackdown on illegal gambling comes at a time when online casinos are under increased scrutiny and are prohibited from operating in Thailand. The presence of these illegal gambling sites has raised concerns among Chinese officials.
Crackdown on Cross-Border Gambling
During a meeting in Beijing, Chinese officials urged Thailand to crack down on cross-border gambling activities that involve illegal gambling sites. In response to this request, a team of immigration and local police in Thailand arrested two South Koreans who were allegedly running an online casino operation from a house in Udon Thani province.
Pol Lt Gen Panumart Boonyalak, the immigration bureau chief, coordinated the operation against the South Korean nationals. The suspects were found running the illegal online casino through dedicated server systems and were taken in for questioning by the authorities.
Illegal Gambling Websites and Operations
The suspects were reported to be operating under the names of Vinus Gaming Services and 100d-1, which have a strong global user base. They confessed to maintaining the illegal gambling websites, facilitating transactions for gamblers, and advertising the websites in South Korea and other countries. The online casino primarily targeted South Korean clients but also offered gambling options for players in Thailand and neighboring countries.
According to reports, the illegal online casino operation had a monthly turnover of $2.80 million (4 billion South Korean won). The suspects admitted to receiving monthly salaries ranging from $2,300 to $2,900 each for maintaining the websites and promoting them in targeted countries.
Stepping Up Enforcement Against Illegal Gambling
Chinese authorities have been urging Thai officials to intensify efforts in combating illegal gambling activities. Recently, a man from mainland China was sentenced to six years for running an extensive illegal gambling operation that catered to gamblers in remote areas of Macau.
In another incident, a mainland Chinese actor named Wang Xing was abducted by criminals in Thailand and forced to participate in illegal gambling and telecommunication scam operations. Fortunately, local law enforcement was able to rescue him from the illegal activities.
Thailand remains committed to cracking down on illegal online casinos and other forms of illegal gambling, as authorities work to protect the integrity of the country’s gaming industry and ensure the safety of its citizens.
